What Do You Do When You Are In An Accident?

What Do You Do When You Are In An Accident?

I lived all over the United States and even overseas, and every place I have ever lived boasts the “worst drivers anywhere!”  This bodes true in Fayetteville, NC. Hopefully, you never experience an accident, but here are some tips to help you if you do. Contact us if you have any questions or recently got into an accident to see how Team E-Z Auto can help you.

1.Determine Injuries

No matter how severe the accident is or is not, never leave the scene. Priority number one is safety. Your safety, the safety of those around you, as well as any others involved in your collision. Ensure everyone is accounted for and address anything that requires immediate attention.

2.Remove the vehicles from the flow of traffic

Be aware of your surroundings! If you can, remove the vehicles from the flow of traffic. If the accident is severe, people have injuries, or the vehicles are extremely damaged and unsafe to drive, place hazard cones or emergency flares to alert other drivers on the road that there is an obstacle up ahead.

3.Call the Police

Report the accident to your local police and take the badge number and name of the officers who report to your scene. For example, in minor accidents, the police might not come in person and will take the report online. If this happens, you can ask your insurance or the local police department for a copy.

4.Exchange vital information

With practically everyone having a smartphone, it has never been easier to exchange information and document the accident. Take photos of the insurance, registration, license plates, and contact information. When discussing insurance, never provide others with your coverage limits. Don’t give out too much personal information, just a way for their insurance to contact you and your insurance agent or company.

5.Document Everything

I’ll repeat it, Document Everything! Take multiple pictures from different angles of all vehicles involved. Don’t forget photographs that include the surrounding area, such as skid marks or public or personal property damage. Get everyone’s make, model, year, color, and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). If names don’t match on the documents, inquire about the driver’s relationship to the individual. Write down the time of the accident and everything you remember as soon as possible while it is fresh in your mind.

6.Avoid Accepting Fault

After an accident, blood and adrenaline are pumping in your body, and emotions can flare. It is imperative not to cause further conflict. Don’t accept fault, but remember this is not the time to argue. Be safe and trust your gut. Be smart and wait for the police if you don’t feel safe.

7.Call Insurance

Call your local agent or insurance office and start your claim. However enticing it might be to accept a cash payout and not involve your insurance to avoid higher premiums… the payout might not be worth it. Take into consideration things such as internal damage, bodily harm, or problems with your vehicle further down the road caused by the accident. Work with your insurance as they work with you. Most insurance companies offer roadside assistance and will take care of you in the event of an accident.

8.Call your Bank or Finance Company

You should contact your lienholder or lessor within 24 hours (if possible). Accidents will not cause your monthly vehicle payment to increase. However, you are still responsible for the vehicle’s repairs. Contact your lienholder or lessor right away as not to cause further conflict, and so they can be involved in the process to avoid any hiccups in getting you back on the road. This is why Team E-Z Auto insists on these coverage requirements making repairs and surprise expenses much more manageable.

9.Get Medical Attention

Even if you feel perfectly fine, see a doctor. Just like there might have been internal damage to your vehicle, there might be something you don’t notice until after the fact. You want to make sure you are safe and healthy, not just immediately after the accident. The best way to do that is to document any injuries for insurance purposes.

I hope you are not sitting on the side of the road right now, with a smoking engine looking at these tips. If you are, I’m sorry, and I hope everything is ok! However, the best way to prepare for something is before it happens. So if you found this helpful, make sure to share this article with a friend, especially if they may be one of those “worst drivers ever.”
